How to Tailor Your CV for Sri Lankan Companies

Sending the same CV to every job you apply for is one of the most common and costly mistakes Sri Lankan job seekers make. Tailoring your CV to each specific opportunity can double or even triple your interview callback rate. Here's how to do it without spending hours on each application.

Step 1: Analyse the Job Description Carefully

Read the job posting at least twice. Highlight the key skills, qualifications, and experience they require. Note the specific language they use — if they say "proactive," "results-driven," or "customer-focused," these are signals about the company's culture and values. Your CV should reflect this language naturally.

Step 2: Research the Company

Visit the company's website, LinkedIn page, and recent news articles. Understand their values, recent achievements, and business direction. A candidate who demonstrates knowledge of the company's strategic priorities in their CV summary instantly stands out from the crowd in Sri Lanka's competitive market.

Step 3: Rewrite Your Professional Summary

Your summary is the highest-value real estate on your CV. For each application, adjust it to directly reflect the role title and key requirements. If the role is "Senior Marketing Manager at a leading FMCG company in Sri Lanka," your summary should say something like: "Senior Marketing Manager with 8 years of FMCG experience in Sri Lanka, specializing in brand strategy and digital growth."

Step 4: Reorder Your Bullet Points

Move the most relevant achievements to the top of each experience section. If the role values leadership and you managed a team of 15, that bullet should be the first thing they read about your most recent role — not the fifth.

Step 5: Match Your Skills Section to the Job
