LinkedIn Profile Photo Tips for Sri Lankan Professionals
Studies show that LinkedIn profiles with professional photos receive 21x more views. In Sri Lanka's professional community, your photo immediately communicates your personal brand and professional standards.
What to Wear
Business professional or business casual is the standard for most Sri Lankan LinkedIn profiles. For corporate roles (banking, law, accounting, HR): formal business attire — suit and tie for men, business formal for women. For creative or tech roles: smart casual is fine. Make sure your clothing is clean, pressed, and reflects the professional standard of your industry.
Background
A plain, neutral background works best — white, grey, light blue, or a subtle gradient. Avoid busy backgrounds, outdoor landscapes, or obviously personal settings. Office backgrounds can work well if they're professional and not distracting. LinkedIn now offers virtual background options, but real backgrounds generally look more authentic to Sri Lankan recruiters.
Lighting
Natural light from a window is ideal. Face the light source rather than having it behind you. Avoid harsh direct sunlight which creates unflattering shadows. Even smartphone photos taken near a window in good natural light can look very professional with the right framing.
Framing and Expression
Your face should fill about 60% of the frame. Look directly at the camera with a genuine, confident, and approachable expression. A natural smile builds trust and warmth. Avoid very serious or stern expressions — Sri Lankan recruiters respond better to approachable, positive profile images.
Technical Specifications
LinkedIn recommends a photo of at least 400 x 400 pixels. Use JPG or PNG format. A square crop (1:1 ratio) works best. Keep the file size under 8MB. Invest in a proper headshot if you're in a senior role — the return on investment is enormous.
