The opening of your cover letter creates the first impression. Here's exactly how to address it for different Sri Lankan employers.

When You Know the Hiring Manager's Name

This is always the best scenario. 'Dear Ms. Perera,' or 'Dear Mr. Wijesinghe,' is personal and professional. Find the name through the company website, LinkedIn, or by calling the company's reception and asking who is responsible for recruitment for this vacancy.

When You Only Know the Department

Use 'Dear HR Manager,' or 'Dear Head of Finance,' (for role-specific applications). This is more targeted than a generic salutation and shows you've done some research.

When You Have No Information

'Dear Hiring Manager,' is the modern professional standard. Avoid 'To Whom It May Concern' which sounds archaic. In Sri Lanka's professional culture, 'Dear Hiring Manager,' is widely accepted and respected.

For Government Positions

Government applications in Sri Lanka require more formal salutations. Use 'Dear Sir/Madam,' for standard applications. For very senior positions, 'Honourable Secretary' or 'The Director General' may be appropriate — follow the specific instructions in the job advertisement.

For International Companies in Sri Lanka

International companies operating in Sri Lanka (multinationals, NGOs) often prefer more casual but professional openings. 'Dear [First Name],' is increasingly common and accepted in international work cultures. If in doubt, stick with the formal Mr./Ms. approach — it's always appropriate.
