Getting the format right is the foundation of a great cover letter. Here's the exact structure that works for most Sri Lankan job applications.

Your Contact Details Header

At the top right (or centered): Your Full Name, Phone Number, Email Address, LinkedIn URL, City, Sri Lanka. Date on the left below this. Then the recipient's name, title, company, and address on the left.

The Salutation

Preferred in Sri Lanka: 'Dear Mr./Ms. [Last Name],' — always try to find the name. If you genuinely cannot find a name after research, use 'Dear Hiring Manager,' — this is better than 'Dear Sir/Madam' which feels impersonal.

Opening Paragraph (2-3 sentences)

The role you're applying for and your most compelling, relevant credential. Hook them immediately. Example: 'As a Chartered Accountant with 9 years in Sri Lanka's FMCG sector, I was immediately drawn to the CFO position at [Company] — your recent expansion into digital payments aligns perfectly with my fintech treasury experience.'

Body Paragraphs (2 paragraphs)

Paragraph 1: Your most relevant achievement with numbers and impact. Paragraph 2: Why this company specifically, and how your skills address their current needs or challenges. Reference something real about the company.

Closing Paragraph

Brief, confident, and action-oriented. Restate your enthusiasm, provide your availability, and request an interview. Sign off with 'Yours sincerely,' followed by your name.

Formatting Details

Font: Same as your CV (Calibri 11pt or Arial 11pt). Margins: 1 inch. Length: Maximum 1 page / 350-400 words. File: Save as PDF, named 'FirstName_LastName_CoverLetter.pdf'.
